Day 2 of our 8 Censored Books where each day on the run up to our event with US author and journalist Katha Pollitt, Abortion Rights Campaign will be highlighting the 8 books that are censored in Ireland. Every book that is censored in Ireland is due to content about abortion. So check back here for tomorrow’s book and let us know what you think at @freesafelegal and using #RepealThe8th or #8Books8Days hashtags.
National Abortion Campaign
ABORTION: OUR STRUGGLE FOR CONTROL
(London: National Abortion Campaign, 1980)
Yesterday we were introduced to the National Abortion Campaign. Well, it turns out the puritan jobsworths of the Censorship of Publications Board had it in for our sisters in the NAC. This writer managed to nab a copy of this very booklet from the bargains section of Connolly Books. But shh, don’t tell! We don’t want friendly booksellers behind bars! (Oh, don’t worry, it’s not as if Ireland ever planned to enforce any of its sentences for abortion-related ‘crimes’. We’re more into stigmatising idle threats, don’t you know.)
An informative history of the NAC’s activities in the 1970s and a fascinating glimpse into pro-choice activism post-1967.
